Riot-shot
Sunam was at rehearsal last night for Orson's Shadow, and was walking to the van right as the riot started over Joe Paterno's firing. She couldn't make it to the van, and got a ride home from another cast member (thanks, Tom). This morning a friend gave a ride downtown. No damage, and thank goodness no parking ticket. Coverage of the riot in the Centre Daily Times included this photo.

Saturday at the park with the kiddoes... this van pulls up, some guys get out, and they start prepping this hot-air balloon. The whole thing took less than an hour, and they were gone. Pretty cool.

I couldn't help but think of Jeff VanderMeer's books City of Saints and Madmen (which was awesome) and Shriek: An Afterword (which was way cool, though ever-so-slightly less awesome). The stories are set in the fictional city of Ambergris, where there is tension between the normal people, the mushroom people, and the spores that will occasionally infect humans and cause them to act in strange ways: just like the zombie ants. I think VanderMeer is the bee's knees, and his books are alternately sublime and creepy. Fungi and fruiting bodies make me shudder. And for one more little Penn State connection: VanderMeer was born about 10 miles from here in Bellefonte, PA, and mentions the town in Saints and Madmen. Here's the video:

Last night on BBC World Service they talked about a new 35-minute documentary The Solo, in which Carl Palmer is filmed playing five different drum sequences. Just him and the drums. It starts with a single snare, and finishes with an eleven-minute drumstravaganza. I hope the movie makes it to Netflix at some point... the most memorable drum solo I've ever seen was Carl Palmer during an ELP tour in the 90s. There is a snippet of the film's introduction on Youtube. Enjoy.

After [insert large single-digit number here] years with a plain-old dumbphone, this weekend I made the plunge. Sunam and I upgraded to Droids: she got the HTC Incredible, and I went with the X. The experience thus far has not been positive. Mine has spent 48+ of the last 72 hours sporting The M of Death (see photo), and Sunam's is proving to be Incredibly less intuitive than her Blackberry. And now we're getting the run-around because I made the terrible mistake of going to a "Verizon authorized retailer," not a "direct Verizon Wireless store." We'll get it straightened out eventually, but right now I'm thinking that plain-old dumphone wasn't so bad.

Welcome-back
Over 17 days of paternity leave I spent about two hours total on e-mail. Most of it was sending out "It's a girl" announcements in the first few days after Moira was born. It was glorious to set the laptop aside for days at a stretch and concentrate on the family. I have a feeling though, that the next couple of days are going to be pretty e-mail heavy. 95% of it will be cruft, deletable without reading. It's sifting through all that e-mail to get at the 5% that is time consuming.

It's also a little humbling to be back at work after a couple weeks and see that everything is in pretty good order. Good to know that our team can keep the ship afloat, though disconcerting to realize one is not as indispensable as hoped. Then again, I haven't gotten through that 5% yet...
